CMN Offers Slate of Activities for Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month. The College of Muscogee Nation (CMN), a tribal college in Okmulgee, is allowing its students, faculty, staff, and the greater community to celebrate. The college has packed the entire month with cultural and language demonstrations and activities like blessings, music, cooking, sports, and more.
The college provides a unique tribal college experience. In addition to the usual curriculum offerings, students received an education augmented by a traditional and holistic approach to learning. CMN’s Marketing coordinator Marissa Lewis said the college is proud to take the initiative and celebrate Native American heritage in a big way. “With Native American Heritage Month increasing in visibility, I think there is both a responsibility and a natural desire for a tribal college to do it big,” she said.
“We do cultural and language demonstrations and activities
throughout the academic year, and we highly value Indigenous knowledge in our curriculums. We’ve packed nearly a year’s worth of events into one month, and our college community loves it.”
With only half the month of November remaining, the college has much more planned, including dancing, poetry, language, and storytelling. The college invites the community to join its celebration of Native American heritage by attending one or more of its events.
“We love celebrating our beautiful and diverse Indigenous cultures with our local community,” said Lewis. “Also, we love allowing future students to sample the college experience here at the College of the Muscogee Nation.”
A complete listing of CMN’s Native American Heritage Events can be found on its website at https://cmn.edu/nahm-2022-calendar/. All events are hosted on campus at 2170 Raven Circle, Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
