Academic Advising

Academic advising at the College of the Muscogee Nation is a collaborative and culturally respectful partnership designed to support your academic journey and personal growth. Your advisor is here to guide you through your program of study, help you understand college policies, and connect you with campus resources that promote success. While advisors provide knowledge and support, your active participation is essential. Together, we share responsibility in building a strong advising relationship that empowers you to make informed decisions and achieve your goals.

  • Discuss your academic progress and help you create an improvement plan.

  • Assist you in building a class schedule that fits your degree plan and goals.
  • Guide you through the process of entering your desired program or major.
  • Encourage you to explore your interests and choose courses that inspire and challenge you.

Preparing For Your Advising Appointment

As your appointment approaches, taking a few proactive steps can help ensure a smooth and stress-free process.

  1. Schedule Your Advising Appointment Early
Before registering for classes, you must meet with your academic advisor to plan your schedule. Use the trimester course offerings to preview your weekly layout and come prepared with questions or course preferences.
Tip: Advisors may book up quickly—schedule early to secure your spot.
  2. Clear Any Holds on Your Account
Check your student portal for any holds that may prevent you from enrolling. These could include financial, academic, or documentation-related holds. Resolving them early ensures you won’t face delays during registration.
  3. Review Your Degree Progress Audit
Use the “Programs of Study” section in the student portal to check your Degree Progress Audit. This will show:

    • Courses completed
    • Courses still needed
    • Any transfer or AP credits applied

If you’re nearing graduation, bring a copy of your unofficial transcript and your degree progress audit to your advising appointment. This will help your advisor ensure you’re on track and identify any final requirements.

Be mindful of the cutoff date for this form—missing the deadline could delay your graduation. Check with the Registrar’s Office for the exact date each trimester.

Preparing in advance for your advising appointment ensures a productive and meaningful conversation with your advisor.

After the Trimester Begins

If you need to add a class after the trimester starts, you must act quickly. There is a cutoff date for adding classes, which is listed on the CMN Academic Calendar. Adding a class after this deadline typically requires special approval and may not be allowed.

After the First 10 Days of the Trimester

Registrar approval required

After the 10-day window, you must meet with the registrar to discuss your academic standing and the impact of dropping the course.

Submit an Add/Drop Form

You’ll need to complete a Course Add/Drop Form

Receive a Grade of “W”

If approved, the course will appear on your transcript with a grade of “W” (Withdrawn), which does not affect your GPA but can affect your SAP.

Deadline to Withdraw

There is a final deadline to withdraw from a course, usually around the midpoint of the trimester. This date is also listed on the Academic Calendar.

Dropping a Class

Before the First 10 Days of the Trimester

Meet with Your Academic Advisor

Discuss your reasons for dropping the course and explore other options, such as tutoring or taking an incomplete.

Submit a Drop Request

You can drop the class by completing a drop form with your advisor.

Check the Academic Calendar

Make sure you are within the official drop period to avoid penalties. The last day to drop with a refund is typically listed on the CMN Academic Calendar.

Before You Drop a Class

If you’re struggling in a course, it’s important to take action early. Start by talking with your instructor—they may be able to offer tutoring, extra help, or even discuss the possibility of taking an incomplete instead of dropping the class.

If, after exploring these options, you decide that dropping the course is the best choice, be sure to speak with your academic advisor or the registrar. They can guide you through the process and help you understand the academic and administrative steps involved.

Keep in mind: Dropping a class can affect your financial aid, housing eligibility, and other support services. Always check with the financial aid office and any other relevant departments before making a final decision.
